What Is a Boom Truck?

A boom truck is a truck-mounted hydraulic crane that drives to your job site under its own power. Unlike larger cranes that require transport on separate trailers, boom trucks arrive ready to work with minimal setup time. The crane is mounted directly on the truck chassis and can extend, rotate, and lift loads with precision.

Boom trucks are one of the most versatile pieces of equipment in the crane industry. They’re powerful enough to handle significant lifts while compact enough to work in tight spaces where a full-size crane can’t fit or isn’t cost-effective. The flatbed also lets you carry your load to the job site and lift it into place — one trip, one piece of equipment.

For contractors and businesses across Western and Central Pennsylvania, boom trucks are often the most practical choice for lifts under 30 tons. They’re the workhorse behind everyday construction — setting HVAC units on rooftops, placing transformers at substations, lifting steel beams into position, and delivering heavy materials to elevated work areas. If you’ve driven past a construction site and seen a truck with a crane on the back, that’s a boom truck doing what it does best.

Sky Point Crane operates multiple boom truck configurations ranging from 20-ton stand-up units to our 30-ton swing seat with 146 feet of reach. Every rental includes a certified NCCCO operator, so you get professional equipment and a professional at the controls. No separate operator fee. No surprises.

Boom Truck vs. Crane — Which Do You Need?

One of the most common questions we get is whether a customer needs a boom truck or a larger hydraulic crane. Here’s a simple way to think about it:

Choose a boom truck when:

Your load is generally under 20 tons. The lift doesn’t require extreme reach or height. Your job site is tight, in a parking lot, on a street, or in a residential area. You need fast setup and a quick turnaround. You want to keep costs down for a straightforward lift.

Choose a hydraulic crane when:

Your load exceeds 20 tons. You need extended reach or lift heights beyond what a boom truck can achieve. The project involves sustained, heavy-duty lifting over multiple days. Site conditions require a crane with greater capacity and stability.

Not sure? That’s exactly why we’re here. Call (724) 471-5710, describe your lift, and we’ll tell you honestly which piece of equipment is the best fit. If a boom truck can handle the job, we’ll save you money. If you need a bigger crane, we’ll make sure you have the right one. We operate everything from 20-ton boom trucks to all-terrain cranes, so we have no reason to oversell you — we just want to match the right equipment to your project.

Our Boom Truck Fleet

Sky Point Crane operates multiple boom truck configurations so we can match the right unit to your specific lift. Here’s what’s in our boom truck fleet:

Stand-Up Boom Trucks (20–30 Ton)

Our stand-up boom trucks are ideal for quick lifts, tight job sites, and projects where fast setup matters. Available in 20-ton, 23-ton, 26-ton, and 30-ton capacities with 20-foot flatbeds, these units get you on and off the job fast.

The 20-foot flat bed comes in handy for hauling, picking and removing equipment from a site with one truck and one operator.  Most two axle stand up boom trucks have a payload capacity of 8-12 ton.

Stand-up operation gives the operator direct line-of-sight to the load for precise placement. Stand-up boom trucks are popular with HVAC contractors, sign companies, roofers, and general contractors who need a reliable lift without a full crane mobilization.

Typical boom lengths are 75-100 ft main boom with 30-46 swing in place jibs for extra reach, but limited weight lifting capacity

Swing Seat Boom Truck (35 Ton–50 Ton)

Our 35-ton to 55-ton swing seat boom trucks delivers 128 feet of reach up to   The enclosed swing seat cab rotates with the boom, giving the operator 360-degree visibility and comfort for longer jobs.

These swing seat boom trucks also have multiple outrigger configurations for narrow, medium and full width setups which can come in handy in tight spaces. They also come configured with removable counterweights that can be stored on the truck deck for adding capacity and reach, ,without incurring the cost of additional support trucks and labor to haul counterweights.

This unit is a workhorse for HVAC installations, transformer setting, steel erection, and any lift that needs serious reach with precision control.

Stand-Up vs. Swing Seat — What's the Difference?

A stand-up boom truck is operated from an open platform at the base of the boom. The operator stands and has direct visual access to the load. These are great for quick lifts and tight spaces. A swing seat boom truck has an enclosed operator cab that rotates with the boom, similar to a full crane. Swing seat units are better for longer jobs, higher reaches, and situations where 360-degree operation is important. Not sure which one you need? We’ll help you figure that out — just call (724) 471-5710.

How Much Does a Boom Truck Rental Cost?

Boom truck rental costs depend on several factors, and we believe in being upfront about pricing so there are no surprises. At Sky Point Crane, every boom truck rental includes a certified NCCCO operator — you won’t be hit with a separate operator charge.

Factors that affect boom truck rental pricing include: the capacity of the boom truck needed (a 20-ton unit costs less than our 30-ton swing seat with 146 feet of reach), whether you need the boom truck for a few hours or a full day, the distance from our Indiana, PA base to your job site, and any special rigging accessories required for the lift.

Most boom truck jobs are quoted on a half-day or full-day basis, though we also accommodate hourly work for quick lifts. We provide free, no-obligation quotes and will always tell you upfront what the job will cost. No hidden fees. No surprise charges. No mobilization costs buried in the fine print.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A boom truck is a commercial truck with a hydraulic crane mounted on its chassis. It combines the mobility of a truck (it drives on public roads to your job site) with the lifting power of a crane. The flatbed can carry materials to the site, and the crane lifts them into place. Boom trucks typically lift between 10 and 60 tons depending on the model, with telescoping booms that reach 60 to over 160 feet.

Yes. Every Sky Point Crane boom truck operator holds current NCCCO certification. We don’t just meet the minimum — we also provide training to prepare candidates for NCCCO examinations. When you hire a boom truck from Sky Point Crane, you’re getting a certified, experienced professional.

Yes. This is one of the biggest advantages of a boom truck over other types of cranes. Our boom trucks have 20-foot beds that can carry your HVAC unit, transformer, steel, or other materials to the job site and then lift them into place — one trip, one piece of equipment. This saves you the cost of separate delivery.

We’re based in Indiana, PA, which puts us within 30-90 minutes of most job sites in Western and Central Pennsylvania.  We also have crane yards located in PIttsburgh, PA and Clearfield, PA that covers a wide area that we can respond from quickly.  For emergency situations, we offer 24/7 dispatching. For planned projects, we typically schedule within 24-48 hours depending on equipment availability.

Our largest boom truck can lift 15-17 tons at close radius. However, lifting capacity decreases as the boom extends outward — this is true for all cranes. When you call us with your project details, we’ll review the load weight, the distance from the crane to the placement point, and the height required to determine whether a boom truck is sufficient or whether a larger crane is needed.

Boom truck rental costs depend on the tonnage required, duration, distance to the job site, and complexity of the lift. Every rental includes a certified NCCCO operator. Most jobs are quoted on a half-day or full-day basis. Call (724) 471-5710 for a free quote.

In most cases, no special permit is needed for a boom truck operating on private property. However, if the boom truck needs to set up on a public road or sidewalk, street closure permits may be required from your local municipality. We can help coordinate this — it’s something we deal with regularly.

A boom truck has a straight telescoping boom that extends outward and upward — similar to a traditional crane. A knuckle boom (also called an articulating crane) has a jointed arm that folds, similar to a human arm bending at the elbow. Boom trucks generally lift heavier loads and reach higher, while knuckle booms are better for precise placement in tight spaces, loading/unloading trucks, and material handling. Sky Point Crane operates boom trucks; if your project needs a knuckle boom, we’ll let you know.
